Country Christmas, 1966
Written by Loretta Lynn
This song skips along on a sprightly country-folk rhythm, animated by bright steel guitar picking and Lynn's naturally buoyant delivery. Musically, it's pure mid-'60s country comfort: concise, melodic, and built to feel familiar. Lynn's vision of a "country Christmas" is really just one of a typical family get together; I resent the co-opting of traditional values by country artists, as if urban and suburban people don't also "make pallets on the floor" for the overflowing children, sing carols, or open presents at midnight. That gentle exclusion is a bit grating, the kind of folksy myth-making country music has long indulged in. The dismissal of the majority of the population aside, this is a warm, toe-tapping evocation of family and holiday cheer.
