Sleepin' Pills - Nick Waterhouse

I've never heard of Waterhouse, but appears to be pegged as a soul revivalist. This track isn't gritty Philly soul but has a late-'50s, slinky, lounge singer feel. The cool, seductive tone with a Latin style beat and what sounds like bongos gives it a smoky, easy-listening vibe. Lyrically, it's a dreamlike confession. The narrator imagines he's put to sleep (permanently? it's not clear) someone who wronged him: "You kept talking through blood / Asking what you'd done / I said, 'Man you wrong just about everyone.'" Waterhouse delivers it without overt drama, which makes it more unsettling.
