Reverberation, 2021
Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, 1963
One of America's most venerable pop-punk bands races through a guitar-drenched version of the Beach Boys classic, treating it with a surprising amount of reverence. The lines are neither sneered with contempt nor tossed off with detached irony. The guitars are louder, the pace is brisker, and the production is stripped of the Beach Boys' carefully layered sweetness, but the melody survives the trip intact. It's a reminder that good pop songwriting can withstand quite a bit of distortion. It's a perfectly enjoyable cover. Sometimes a song does exactly what it says on the tin.
