Personal Best, 1995
Written by Donna Dresch, Marci Martinez, Jody Bleyle and Kaia Wilson
This queercore, riotgrrrl punk takes me back to my bright college days. This song is a response to the loathsome Oregon Citizens Alliance, a group that I had the pleasure of voting against when I lived in portland. Shredding guitars, rapid-fire drum fills, and the constant collision of melody and abrasion create a feeling of barely controlled panic. The band can pivot from tuneful hooks to full-throated screams in an instant. It's a manifesto, but also the blueprint of a nervous system under siege. Between recollections of the queer flirting, Wilson shrieks in impotent rage: "And fear, fear, I'm sick with it / And I know why / It's cement blocks on my face and legs."
