(Quicksilver Daydreams Of) Maria - Townes Van Zant
4:45
Townes Van Zant, 1969
Written by Townes Van Zant
Originally recorded for Townes' 1968 debut album, For the Sake of the Song, this song was later rerecorded for his third, self-titled album. The original is considerably faster and has different accompaniment; this version slows the song, injecting it with a warm pathos and regret. It's an achingly beautiful love song, a portrait of an idealized muse rendered with romantic Spanish guitar and violin, both played by Van Zandt. It features some of his most deeply moving, almost Shakespearean lyrics: "Well, the diamond fades quickly when matched to the face of Maria / All the harps, they sound empty when she lifts her lips to the sky."
